Electric Fan System Installation Guide for Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 and Series II 4.2
(revised July 29, 2007)

Incorrect installation may be hazardous to your health!

Each E-Type electric fan system is hand-crafted and checked for proper fitment on original Jaguar E-Type V12 and 4.2 radiators.

Please read our warranty information below, prior to installation - improper installation will void warranty.

DO NOT attempt installation of this fan system unless you are mechanically and electrically competent. If in any doubt, go to a competent auto electrician and/or mechanic, and ensure that these installation guidelines are reviewed prior to installation. As with any part on motor vehicle, mechanical failure, serious injury or worse can occur if installed incorrectly.

DO NOT lift, hold, suspend, hang or handle this fan system by the wires (wires may become disengaged) - improper handling will void warranty.

DO NOT allow foam or rubber insulators to interfere with fan operation - improper installation will void warranty.

DO NOT re-tighten nylock nuts.

DO NOT lose the dust caps for the Thermostatic Relay Kits.

DO NOT connect both fans to a single relay or wire.

DO NOT go for a drive until you have verified that both fans are operating! This fan system was tested prior to shipping.

DO NOT LEAVE, and we really mean this, DO NOT LEAVE your car unattended during warm-up after completing installation.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow the engine to go past the 'N' (normal) temperature - NEVER!

Removal Instructions:
Please follow the instructions in your Jaguar Workshop Manual to remove the following items, prior to attempting to install the new Twin Fan System:

  • Disconnect the battery!
  • Disconnect the fan wires.
  • Remove radiator shroud with fans

Ultra Performance Fan System with Optional Curved Blade Fans and Optional Aluminum Alloy Shroud Please follow these instructions for installation of the new Twin Fan System and the electrical circuits:

Twin Fan System

  • Mount shroud with fans attached - do not overtighten, follow manufacturers torque specifications.
  • Connect the Black wires to Negative - Ground.
  • Connect the Blue wires to Positive +.
  • Note: If you reverse the wires then the fans will run backwards!
  • Make sure all electrical connectors are secured.
  • Check everything at least twice!
  • Reconnect battery

Follow instructions for installation of the Thermostatic Relay System below (if purchased).

DO NOT lose the dust caps for the Thermostatic Relay Kit.

Ensure that both fans start when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

DO NOT go for a drive until you have verified that both fans are operating and keeping your engine at or below the 'N' (Normal) temperature!

Tip: Most mechanics that specialize in Jaguar, particularly Jaguar V12 engined-cars, will acknowledge that the otter switch activates too late to be of real benefit to your Jaguar's V12 cooling requirements.

Adjustable and non-adjustable thermostatic switch relays are available for purchase at v12s.com. Fan relays should be controlled by thermostatic switches to minimize battery drain and to avoid exceeding the duty cycle of the fans.

Adjustable Thermostatic Switch & Relay System Installation Guide for Jaguars

Thermostatic Switch and Relay

Please read our warranty information below, prior to installation - improper installation will void warranty.

DO NOT attempt installation of this thermostatic switch & relay system unless you are mechanically and electrically competent. If in any doubt, go to a competent auto electrician and/or mechanic.

DO NOT LEAVE, and we really mean this, DO NOT LEAVE your car unattended during warm-up after completing installation.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow the engine to go past the 'N' (normal) temperature - NEVER!

Install the Thermostatic Relay System into the top radiator hose:

  • Ensure that the engine is cold before starting
  • Partially drain the radiator cooling system to allow you to remove the top radiator hoses
  • Remove the top right and left radiator hoses
  • Select a location on the radiator hose (see photo) in a straight section
  • Remove a 4/5" section of hose
  • Fit the Thermostatic Relay System into the radiator hose
  • Secure the Thermostatic Relay System to the radiator hose with the clamps provided
  • Top up the radiator coolant and check for leaks & air pockets (precisely follow Jaguar's instructions for topping up the radiator coolant level)

Please review Diagrams below and apply to your specific installation.

Adjustable Thermostatic Switch & Relay System Wiring:

  • Disconnect the battery!
  • The main relay power source should come from the 'battery' or the 'STA' (accessory) big terminal on the starter solenoid. DO NOT attempt to get the main relay power from the fuse box! - Insufficient voltage will reduce the performance of the fans. Running wires to the battery may be simpler than running wires to the 'STA' terminal.
  • Incorrect relay installation may cause incorrect temperature gauge readings - if in doubt, check top radiator hose temperature with an infrared thermometer such as a Mini-Temp (available at NAPA).
  • Use fuses to protect all circuits.
  • Make sure all electrical connectors are secured.
  • Check everything at least twice!
  • Reconnect the battery

The temperature control on the thermostatic switch & relay system has been set to start fans as early as possible, around 700C (typical E-Type Jaguar themostats start to open around 820C) - you can fine tune the desired start temperature of the fans later, once you have verified that the fans are operational.

Tip: Start the fans before the engine thermostat starts to open at 820C.

Then, start car and let engine idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, DO NOT LEAVE CAR UNATTENDED AND DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TEMPERATURE TO EXCEED 'N' (NORMAL).

Ensure that the fans start at or before the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

DO NOT go for a drive until you have verified that the fans are operating.

The thermostatic temperature control potentiometer is under the black plastic dust cover (DO NOT lose the dust caps for the Thermostatic Relay Kits) inside the aluminum housing installed in the radiator hose. The adjuster has a single sweep of just a 3/4 turn. Turn the adjuster gently by hand (use a small screw driver if necessary) - DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE ON THE ADJUSTER. Adjust the temperature in small increments until the desired fan operation is achieved - it is better to run a little cooler than to run too hot. Temperature adjustments may not be evident immediately as it will take the engine some minutes to either warm up further or to reduce temperature - in fact it may take up to 20 minutes or longer to see results when adjusting the temperature control to a cooler setting.

Fans will continue to run after the ignition has been turned 'off' to provide engine cool-down - fans may cycle on and off for up to 20 minutes until engine coolant is below, and stays below, the temperature set on the thermostatic switches. You can wire one fan to an ignition controlled power source (see diagram) if both fans running after shut-down causes battery drain problems. We recommend a deep-cycle battery such as the Optima for best performance.

NOTE: If your voltage meter shows a drop below 12 volts while idling then your electric fans are not getting enough voltage and are running too slowly or not at all. Ensure that you follow the thermostatic relay installation instructions.

Polishing your aluminum shroud:

We use a Mothers magnesium and aluminium polishing paste (available at Advance Auto Parts, Pep Boys & Autozone etc.). The more you polish your shroud the more it will shine like chrome. Imperfections in the aluminum are normal and unavoidable by the manufacturers.
